Governors of the Northern States have condemned the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing it as tragic and inconsistent with the region’s values.
The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, made the remarks on Monday after the forum’s quarterly meeting held in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, Yahaya said the incident shows the urgency of strengthening efforts to address security challenges across the region.
He noted that the governors had reviewed the security situation in Northern Nigeria and reaffirmed their commitment to tackling both security and socio-economic issues affecting the region.
Yahaya described the attack as a deviation from the North’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among diverse communities.
“Such acts of violence are alien to the North, a region historically known for coexistence, mutual respect, and enduring brotherhood among diverse communities.”

He called on residents of Plateau State, particularly those in affected areas, to remain calm and avoid any form of retaliation, warning that reprisals could further escalate tensions.
The governor also urged community leaders, religious figures, and youth groups to work collectively to maintain peace and stability.
He commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for what he described as swift measures to contain the situation, including the imposition of a curfew and deployment of security personnel.
“I commend my brother governor, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang, for the prompt actions taken to contain the situation and restore calm. These timely measures are critical in preventing further breakdown of law and order,” he said.
Yahaya said the response demonstrated leadership and a commitment to preventing further breakdown of law and order.
He reaffirmed the forum’s support for security agencies and pledged continued collaboration to combat violence and criminality in the region.
The NSGF chairman expressed confidence that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice and extended condolences to the families of victims, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
