NRC Resumes Abuja-Kaduna Train Operations

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the restoration of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route following a train accident which occurred on Monday.

No fewer than 26 passengers sustained injuries on Monday, following a collision by the Abuja-Kaduna train, which had over 400 passengers on board.

The accident, which occurred near Asham along the busy rail line connecting Abuja and Kaduna, involved a power car and a trailing locomotive. The power car and the trailing locomotive collided with one of the passenger coaches.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, in a post shared on X, assured passengers of improved safety following Monday’s rail collision.

“Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys,” said Opeifa.

“We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, yesterday, 17th March 2026, with the support of HRH (Alhaji) Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja. Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”

Monday’s incident, which occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station on a downward section of the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, involved train KA2, which had departed Rigasa and made a scheduled stop at Jere before continuing its journey.

The locomotive became detached while the train was moving, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train, resulting in a serious operational occurrence after leaving Jere.

No fatalities were recorded, but 26 passengers sustained injuries.
