Alhassan Yahaya, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has called for improved welfare and better working conditions for journalists across Nigeria. Speaking at a press briefing to mark the 70th anniversary of the Union at its national headquarters in Abuja, Yahaya criticised the treatment of media practitioners, emphasising that the glamour associated with the media had been diminished by poor remuneration and the shabby treatment of journalists and media workers.
He expressed concern over the growing trend of professionals leaving the media industry due to low pay and inadequate welfare. Yahaya highlighted how long working hours, tight deadlines, and poor working conditions contribute to stress-related health issues and expose journalists to risks while on assignments.

While congratulating journalists across the country, Yahaya also raised alarms about the increasing spread of misinformation and disinformation, which pose serious threats to public discourse. He urged journalists to adapt to technological advancements in order to effectively counter the rise of fake news, hate speech, and the challenges posed by misinformation in the digital age.
As the NUJ celebrates seven decades of existence, Yahaya called for a stronger, more accountable form of journalism, one that embraces investigative and critical reporting, prioritises national interest, and promotes media literacy to combat the spread of false information.
