Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Darwin Nunez’s decisive impact after the striker’s two stoppage-time goals secured a 2-0 win over Brentford, extending the Reds’ Premier League lead to seven points on Saturday.
The Uruguayan, who had faced criticism for his inconsistency, came off the bench to end his league goal drought since November, delivering a crucial victory after Liverpool’s recent struggles.
“During the season you’re hoping for these moments,” Slot said. “We could have scored late winners against United, Forest, and Fulham. Today it worked.”
Nunez’s £85 million move from Benfica in 2022 has been scrutinized, and he has been linked with a transfer to the Saudi Pro League. However, Slot highlighted his energy and power as vital attributes that can turn games.
“He’s always having a lot of impact when he comes in. To have someone like Darwin is nice to have,” Slot remarked, acknowledging Nunez’s ability to change the dynamic of matches, even as a substitute.
The 25-year-old has faced competition from Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota for the central forward role but seized his opportunity with a match-winning performance.
Liverpool entered the match with a mixed run of form, having drawn three of their last six league games, including frustrating results against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.
Slot expressed satisfaction with his team’s effort and perseverance: “I don’t only look at results. We created a lot. But now it’s a win, so I don’t have to say look at our performance.” The Liverpool boss also credited Brentford for making the contest competitive: “They have good players and a good game plan. It was a nice game to watch, like every time Liverpool are on the pitch.”
With this victory, Liverpool solidified their position at the top of the Premier League table, maintaining their title charge as they look to reclaim domestic glory.
