The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Nigerian government, demanding improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for its members.

The notice, signed by National Secretary Enya Osinachi and released by President Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan on Monday, follows an emergency National Executive Council meeting held on July 10.

This action comes after a previous 15-day ultimatum, issued on July 14, expired without a satisfactory response from the Nigerian government or the Federal Ministry of Health.

NANNM-FHI announced that if their demands are not met, a total service withdrawal will begin at noon on Tuesday, July 29, across all federal health institutions. Nurses nationwide have been urged to comply and show solidarity.

The association emphasised the crucial role nurses play in healthcare, contributing 60–70 per cent of hospital services, and asserted their entitlement to better welfare, fair treatment, and recognition.

NANNM-FHI specifically rejected a June 27 circular from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, demanding its reversal and adjustments to various allowances, including shift, call duty, and retention.

The association urged the Nigerian government to engage constructively, stressing that a well-supported nursing workforce is vital for quality healthcare outcomes and maintaining public health across all federal medical institutions in Nigeria.
