The Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader, Shamsideen Oladiti, also known as Shameleon, at a correctional centre, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to PUNCH Metro, the Lagos State Police Command had arrested the 55-year-old over allegations of assault and murder.
In a statement written by the command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, Oladiti allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, beating him with a helmet and his fists, causing severe injuries.
Oluseyi added that a separate complaint had earlier been lodged against the suspect over an incident on August 28, 2025. During a confrontation, Oladiti allegedly struck another man multiple times on the head and face with a metallic ring, leaving him critically injured.
Despite receiving medical treatment, the victim — identified as Imam Ramon — died on September 17, 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
Following his arrest, Oladiti was detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba. He was subsequently arraigned on a three-count charge before the court, which ordered his remand.
The case was adjourned to October 28 and directed to be duplicated for legal advice from the DPP.
The victim’s death sparked protests at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathisers reportedly set two of his motorcycles ablaze, escalating tension in the area.
The incident has once again highlighted public concerns over the violent conduct of some NURTW officials, with residents urging the government to rein in their excesses.
