The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has begun a manhunt for the suspect accused of killing a 30-year-old Nigerian man, Sheriff Shittu, during a shooting at a nightclub in East Flatbush.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for justice from the victim’s family. Shittu was fatally shot in the early hours of February 14 inside Quilox Lounge.
According to a report by Gothamist, which is operated by New York Public Radio, authorities are searching for a man who opened fire on another patron at the Brooklyn nightclub on Valentine’s Day.
Police said the violence followed an altercation inside the club, located on Church Avenue near East 95th Street in Brooklyn. The shooting occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.
An NYPD official stated that Shittu was shot in the head and was later pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Centre. Investigations are ongoing as officers work to identify and apprehend the suspect.

“Police said they are still investigating a motive for the shooting and do not yet have details about the argument between the men,” the report stated.
Police said the suspect was last seen wearing a black jacket and white trousers before running from the nightclub. He disappeared into the night, and officers have not yet confirmed the direction in which he fled.
Data cited in the report shows that Shittu’s killing was the first deadly shooting recorded in the precinct this year. As of February 15, 2025, five people had been shot in the area, underscoring growing concerns about gun violence in the community.
According to News 12 Brooklyn, Shittu’s brothers are struggling to come to terms with the loss. They described him as a gentle and kind-hearted young man who dreamed of building a name for himself in the fashion industry. To them, he was more than a statistic — he was family, full of ambition and hope for the future, whose life was cut tragically short.
“We’re just feeling sad, and everybody is holding it in. We’re trying to be strong right now, but we’re really worried about getting justice for him,” his younger brother, Salem Shittu, said.
Sheriff had gone to the nightclub with his brother to celebrate a friend’s birthday when the evening took a tragic turn. What began as a joyful gathering reportedly changed after a disagreement broke out between him and another guest. The argument quickly intensified, setting off a chain of events that ended in violence.
“We don’t know why the security failed to properly search before somebody brought a gun into the club,” Salem added.
“He was being kicked out and was being escorted out when he did it.”
For the Shittu family, the loss has left a deep void, with justice now their only source of solace.
Shittu’s death occurred just days after another tragic loss involving a young Nigerian abroad. Khaleed Oladipo, a 20-year-old student at De Montfort University, was fatally stabbed in a street attack in Leicester.
Reports said Oladipo was assaulted near a busy university building while on his way home. He had been looking forward to watching the semi-final clash between Arsenal F.C. and Chelsea F.C. in the EFL Cup.
