Obamas in Talks to Produce Biopic on Golf Icon Tiger Woods

A source familiar with the discussions told AFP on Wednesday that Barack and Michelle Obama are in negotiations to produce a biographical film about golf legend Tiger Woods.

According to Hollywood trade outlet Deadline, which first reported the news, the project is being developed at Amazon MGM.

The film is set to be based on The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played, a book by Kevin Cook detailing Woods’ historic achievement of winning all four major golf tournaments consecutively in 2000-01.

Acclaimed filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green, best known for King Richard, the Oscar-winning film about Venus and Serena Williams’ rise to tennis stardom, is attached to direct the project.

Higher Ground Productions, the Obamas’ media company, has previously produced award-winning films such as American Factory and the Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind.

Tiger Woods, widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, became the first Black player to win a major championship at the 1997 Masters.

The upcoming film will focus on his unprecedented “Tiger Slam,” when he won the 2000 US Open, British Open, and PGA Championship, before adding the 2001 Masters to hold all four major titles simultaneously.

The film will reportedly steer clear of Woods’ controversies, including the 2009 scandal that led to the collapse of his marriage.

His last major victory came at the 2019 Masters, and on Tuesday, Woods announced he had suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, adding another setback to his injury-ridden career.
