Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged his supporters to turn out in large numbers and safeguard their votes at polling units during the 2027 election until the results are announced.
The NDC candidate made the call after travelling to Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, where he met with stakeholders and party supporters alongside the party’s Kogi East senatorial candidate, High Chief Peter Ameh.
In a post on X on Sunday evening, Obi said the engagements reinforced his commitment to addressing insecurity, healthcare, education, unemployment and poverty, which he identified as some of the major concerns confronting Nigerians.
“We urged our supporters to remain dedicated to the democratic process, turn out in large numbers to vote, and, above all, safeguard and defend their votes from the polling unit through the final declaration of results,” Obi said.
The call to protect votes was the strongest political message from Obi’s latest outreach, as he sought to mobilise supporters to participate in the electoral process while positioning his campaign as focused on basic governance and economic concerns.
Obi said he also visited Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State and Obollo Afor in Enugu State, where he met with residents, including traders operating along the routes.
He said the conversations revealed that Nigerians across different communities were expressing largely similar concerns.
“Across all these engagements, the concerns expressed by our people remain essentially the same,” he said.
“They seek security in their communities, meaningful employment opportunities for our youths, access to properly functioning hospitals and schools for their children, and the means and resources to lead decent, dignified lives.”
Obi described these demands as fundamental government responsibilities, not unreasonable expectations.
“These are not excessive demands. They represent the basic expectations citizens hold of a government dedicated to their welfare,” he said.
He assured traders and other residents he met during the journey that his leadership would prioritise their welfare and create conditions that would enable businesses to grow.”
The NDC candidate later paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Igwe Willy Ezugwu, Eze Ka Eze I of Ideke Land and Eze Ogbozalla III of Opi Kingdom in Nsukka, Enugu State.
Obi said the traditional ruler offered prayers and royal blessings, adding that he was grateful for the monarch’s “fatherly counsel, encouragement, and prayers.”
As he rounded off the account of his engagements, Obi reiterated his central political message, saying Nigeria could overcome its challenges with a government committed to serving citizens.
“As we move forward on this journey, our message remains unequivocal: Nigeria can succeed, and government can be made to serve its people,” he said.
