Offices Abandoned: Raid on Maradona Medical Firm Yields No Evidence

Argentine police attempting to raid the offices of a medical company involved in the care of Diego Maradona at the time of his death in 2020 were left empty-handed after discovering the firm had moved years ago.

The raid on Medidom was authorised as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the football legend’s death. Officers had been seeking evidence related to the trial of seven medical professionals who were responsible for Maradona’s care when he died at home at the age of 60, following surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.

A police source told AFP that the team had arrived at Medidom’s former premises in Buenos Aires only to be informed that the company had long since relocated. Authorities are now planning to carry out a raid at the company’s new address.

This marks the second raid on a medical facility in connection with the case. The first was conducted at the Olivos Clinic in Buenos Aires, where Maradona underwent brain surgery in November 2020.

The seven defendants—part of Maradona’s medical team—are facing charges of “homicide with possible intent”, a serious offence in Argentina that carries a sentence of between eight and 25 years in prison. Prosecutors have accused the group of presiding over a “horror theatre” in Maradona’s final days, during which he was recovering in a private home in the Buenos Aires suburb of Tigre.

Maradona died of heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema—a condition involving fluid buildup in the lungs—just two weeks after the operation. Witnesses have described his living conditions as substandard, with reports of a dirty room and a lack of essential medical equipment.

The trial, which began on 11 March in San Isidro on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, is expected to continue until July.
