The Ogun State Government has expressed deep sympathy to the families, friends, and associates of those who lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, who narrowly escaped death on Monday.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinlade, on Monday, December 29, the government described the incident as painful and deeply regrettable.

The fatal crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway around the Makun axis of Ogun State and claimed the lives of two people.

Anthony Joshua and three others were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the accident happened.

Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died instantly, and authorities have deposited their remains at the Livewell Mortuary in Sagamu.

Security personnel attached to Joshua’s convoy rescued him and the driver from the scene and rushed them to a hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Reports said the sport utility vehicle conveying them crashed into a stationary truck on the expressway.

Officials have moved the badly damaged vehicle to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while arrangements are underway to tow the truck for a full investigation.

The state government described the incident as a devastating loss, noting that while some occupants sustained injuries and are receiving care, the loss of lives remains particularly tragic.

The government urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly obey traffic rules, especially during the festive season when roads are busier.

It also called on road safety officials and security agencies to intensify monitoring and enforcement across the state.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” the statement said, adding prayers for the repose of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.
