Global energy markets saw a reprieve on Monday as oil prices declined and major stock indices climbed, fuelled by signs of potential stabilisation in the Middle East.

West Texas Intermediate dropped over 5% to roughly $94 per barrel, while Brent crude slipped to around $101.

This downward trend followed news that a Pakistani tanker successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz with its transponder active—marking the first non-Iranian vessel to do so since the conflict began—and a reassuring statement from IEA chief Fatih Birol regarding the availability of further strategic reserves.

On Wall Street and across European markets, equities responded positively to the cooling energy prices.

The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all opened more than 1% higher, while London’s FTSE 100 and Frankfurt’s DAX saw similar gains.

Investors appeared heartened by diplomatic efforts by leaders such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to establish a “viable” plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

However, analysts cautioned that the mood remains fragile as the war enters its third week and regional hostilities, including drone interceptions in Saudi Arabia and disruptions at Dubai’s airport, continue.

Market attention is now shifting toward a pivotal week of central bank meetings, including the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.

Although interest rates are expected to remain steady, traders are eager for guidance on how policymakers plan to manage potential inflation shocks and a prolonged energy crisis.

While the recent dip in crude prices offers temporary relief, the long-term economic outlook remains closely tied to the normalisation of shipping through the world’s most critical oil chokepoint.
