The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned Tuesday’s attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and some members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) who were ambushed by gunmen in Edo.
Obi and the high-ranking political figures who survived the attack in Edo State, to mark the formal entry of former Edo gubernatorial candidate Olumide Akpata into the ADC.
The attack has garnered reactions from various quarters, including ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo, who alleged that the government and its agents were responsible for the attack.
In a statement released following the attack, the Edo State Governor linked it to internal party conflict, which, according to him, has gone too far.
“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” the statement read in part.
“While the precise motive behind this attack remains unclear, I strongly believe its primary aim is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions.”
Okpebholo added that no political blackmail would weaken the support of Edo residents for their government. He also denounced the use of violence by politicians or individuals seeking power, adding that it reflects a lack of integrity and respect for the electorate.
