Oluremi Tinubu Flags Off Distribution of Professional Kits to Midwives in North East

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to maternal and child health, declaring that no woman should lose her life while bringing another into the world. She made the statement during the official flag-off of the distribution of professional kits to midwives across the North East geopolitical zone.

According to a press release signed by Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, the initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), aimed at supporting frontline health workers and enhancing healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Speaking at the ceremony in Jalingo, Senator Tinubu said the demands of the health profession require not only skill and compassion but the proper tools and infrastructure. She emphasised the Federal Government’s continued efforts to retrain 120,000 frontline health workers, revealing that 59,570 have already completed the programme.

“To support this, the Renewed Hope Initiative procured 60,000 branded scrubs and 60,000 pairs of crocs as incentives for our hardworking midwives,” she noted.

She commended the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Muyi Aina, for their efforts in repositioning the sector.

“All six geopolitical zones will receive 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 pairs of crocs,” the First Lady said, adding that the North East is the first zone to receive its share.

Beyond healthcare, Senator Tinubu also announced a N50 million business recapitalisation grant to support 1,000 women petty traders in Taraba State—an initiative matched by the state government with another N50 million for an additional 1,000 women.

The First Lady also presented the RHI kits to the wives of governors from the six North East states and met with the Taraba State Council of Emirs and Chiefs led by the Aku Uka of Wukari. During the meeting, she called for renewed support in the fight against HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, syphilis, and tuberculosis.

In his remarks, Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas praised Senator Tinubu for her dedication to grassroots empowerment and maternal healthcare. Coordinating Minister Prof. Pate echoed similar sentiments, assuring healthcare workers of the government’s appreciation and urging them to continue delivering quality services.

Since its inception in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has implemented targeted interventions across agriculture, education, economic empowerment, and healthcare to improve the lives of Nigerians.
