The Port of Salalah in Oman is scheduled to begin a phased reopening on Tuesday, following a temporary shutdown caused by a drone strike over the weekend.

Maersk, whose subsidiary APM Terminals operates the facility, confirmed that while the attack resulted in a minor injury to one worker and limited damage to a ship-to-shore crane, the terminal remains structurally sound.

The initial 48-hour suspension allowed for thorough safety inspections and the clearance of obstructed underwater sections by diving teams.

Management at the port has implemented enhanced “preventative” security measures to protect personnel and infrastructure as operations resume.

Although the damaged crane remains under repair, Maersk stated that the overall impact on the terminal’s capacity is expected to be minimal.

The company noted that some operational constraints may persist in the short term, but vessels currently en route to the hub will proceed with their scheduled calls, albeit with potential handling delays.

The strike on Salalah, a critical transhipment hub located outside the Strait of Hormuz, has heightened concerns regarding the security of regional shipping lanes.

This incident marks the second time in a month that the facility has been targeted amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.

As the port works toward restoring full capacity, maritime authorities continue to coordinate closely with international partners to ensure the stability of the vital trade corridor.
