A tragic traffic accident involving a fully-laden 40-foot container truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles has claimed the life of a pedestrian and left five others injured along the Cele Expressway corridor, inward Oshodi in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in an official statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.
According to preliminary investigations, the articulated truck—carrying two large containers—reportedly experienced a brake failure while speeding. This loss of control led to the containers detaching and collapsing onto the surrounding vehicles, including a Toyota Camry and a Sienna bus. The impact caused extensive structural damage and multiple casualties.
“One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures to both his arm and leg,” the statement revealed. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) swiftly evacuated the remaining injured individuals to the General Hospital in Isolo for emergency treatment.
LASTMA officers were among the first responders at the scene, coordinating a rescue operation in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and several concerned citizens.
Their combined efforts enabled the timely extraction of victims and the clearance of the expressway, which had been severely congested due to the crash. The Ijesha-Tedo Police Division also deployed security personnel to maintain law and order during the operation.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended “profound condolences to the bereaved family” and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Mr. Bakare-Oki used the opportunity to emphasise the critical need for routine mechanical checks on articulated vehicles, particularly those transporting heavy or containerized cargo, while assuring the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine liability and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
