Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their pursuit of a record-extending tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a decisive 3-0 win over Tunisia in Casablanca.
Former Barcelona player Asisat Oshoala scored the first goal for the Super Falcons just four minutes in, seizing on a low inswinging free-kick from Rinsola Babajide delivered from the left side and forcing the ball into the net amidst a scramble in the Tunisian penalty area.
Babajide, who switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2023 after representing England at youth level, increased the lead in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.
The winger expertly placed the ball past Tunisia goalkeeper Soulaima Jobrani, marking her first goal ever in a senior international tournament.
Chinwendu Ihezuo netted Nigeria’s third goal at the Stade Larbi Zaouli with six minutes left, converting a cross from Ashleigh Plumptre.
This victory places Nigeria at the top of Group B, ahead of Algeria on goal difference, who won against Botswana 1-0 thanks to Ghoutia Karchouni’s goal in the 10th minute.
Nigeria’s next match will be against Botswana on Thursday, while Tunisia seeks their first point against North African rivals Algeria earlier the same day.
