Osimhen Brace Sends Nigeria to AFCON Last Eight

Victor Osimhen netted twice as Nigeria comfortably defeated Mozambique 4-0 in their last-16 matchup at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Former African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, kicked off the scoring in Fes after 20 minutes and played a role in setting up the other three goals during the match.

Osimhen began the game without his signature mask but put it back on before scoring Nigeria’s second goal in the 25th minute. He found the net again shortly after the break, before Akor Adams completed the rout.

This marks the biggest margin of victory in an AFCON knockout match since Egypt defeated Algeria 4-0 in the semi-finals of the 2010 tournament held in Angola.

Eager to redeem themselves after failing to qualify for the World Cup, the Super Eagles will face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Marrakesh. These two teams will meet in the last 16 on Tuesday, and if DR Congo wins, Nigeria will have the opportunity to seek revenge for their penalty shootout loss to the Leopards during the World Cup qualifying playoffs in November.

For Mozambique, this was their first appearance in the knockout stage of an AFCON, having advanced as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage. They proved no match for a Nigerian side that had changed many players from their last group match, in which coach Eric Chelle gave several squad players a chance in a 3-1 win over Uganda.

Atalanta’s Lookman, who scored during the 3-2 victory against Tunisia in the second group match, was restored to the starting lineup and opened the scoring as the first half approached its midpoint.

Using a through ball from Alex Iwobi, Adams was released on the left side of the penalty area, where he cut the ball back for Lookman to finish first-time.

The 28-year-old remained uninjured shortly after that despite colliding with Witi, who kneed Osimhen in the stomach during a challenge.

Lookman’s low cross from the left was converted by Osimhen to make it 3-0 in the 47th minute, effectively extinguishing any chances of a Mozambique comeback.

The Atalanta forward continued to contribute as he set up Adams in the box with 30 minutes left, and the Sevilla forward struck the ball powerfully into the net.
