Former Nigerian Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), has been named by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to lead its Election Observation Mission for the upcoming presidential poll in Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement issued by ECOWAS, the regional bloc announced that the election will take place on October 25, 2025. The observer team, under Osinbajo’s leadership, is set to be on the ground from October 19 to 29, 2025, in line with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which guides electoral processes within member states.
“As Head of Mission, Osinbajo will lead a delegation of eminent West Africans who will engage with key national stakeholders to encourage a peaceful and credible electoral process,” the statement said. “The team will also collaborate with international and domestic observer groups to assess the conduct of the polls.”
The regional bloc stated that deploying the mission reflects ECOWAS’ steadfast commitment to fostering peace, stability, and credible electoral processes across West Africa.
It added that the presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire comes at a pivotal moment for the region, as several member states gear up for significant national polls while striving to strengthen democratic governance and institutional resilience.
