Over 2,000 Hectares of Wheat Harvested in Lake Chad with Government Support

Wheat farmers in the Lake Chad region have begun a large-scale harvest across more than 2,000 hectares in Baga, a community previously devastated by insurgent attacks. The effort is being supported by the Borno State Government, which has provided a free combine harvester to facilitate the process and further its aim of achieving food security.

This harvest marks a significant milestone for Baga, which is gradually rebuilding from the impact of years of conflict. Authorities say the support is part of a broader strategy to revitalise agriculture in the region and reduce dependence on imported food staples.

The Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) is also playing a key role in boosting wheat cultivation across Nigeria. Its initiatives include the development of heat-resistant wheat varieties better suited to the country’s climate, as well as targeted support for farmers. This includes the distribution of quality seeds and the provision of training, particularly aimed at empowering women-led farming operations.

Together, these efforts are expected to strengthen local food systems, improve yields, and reduce the impact of climate challenges on Nigeria’s wheat production.
