Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested a 23-year-old, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, who is suspected of the murder of a six-year-old girl identified as Mutiyatu Sunday and severing her head.

The command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement issued on Sunday, said Akorede was found in possession of the six-year-old’s severed head. Olayinka noted that the police had received information of the girl’s murder, and the state’s commissioner of police directed that operatives be mobilised to the scene, the suspect be rescued, and the exhibit secured.

The suspect survived an attack from an angry mob, who were about to lynch him, before the police intervened.

“Following the arrest, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, one Sodiq Kayode Akorede ‘M’, aged 23, allegedly unlawfully killed a 6-year-old girl, later identified as Mutiyatu Sunday ‘F’, and severed her head, which was recovered from him,” said Olayinka.

He added that Akorede confessed to committing the crime and was thereafter conveyed to a medical facility for necessary treatment following injuries sustained from the mob attack, and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation and prosecution.

Olayinka added that the state’s commissioner of police has warned residents to eschew jungle justice.

“In light of the foregoing, the Commissioner of Police strongly warns against acts of jungle justice, as such unlawful actions impede thorough investigation and ultimately truncate the course of justice,” he added.

“The Command reassures members of the public that justice will be served in this matter and urges residents to remain law-abiding while promptly reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.”
