Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, has called for a thorough investigation into allegations of sexual assault during the recently held festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
Reacting to reports that spread widely on social media, Ibori described the narrative as false, dangerous, and a serious misrepresentation of the culture of the Urhobo and Isoko people. He said the suggestion that any festival in the area permits or encourages sexual violence is deeply troubling and must be corrected.
The incident in question, said to involve the assault of young women in Ozoro, a university town in Isoko North Local Government Area, sparked outrage across the country, with many demanding justice and a clear account of what happened. However, attempts to link it to a cultural celebration have also drawn strong criticism.
Ibori said he was taken aback by the claims, noting that in all his years living in Urhobo land, including his time as governor, he had never come across such a practice. He explained that after hearing the reports, he made efforts to verify them independently.
According to him, initial findings, including consultations with traditional authorities in Ozoro, showed no evidence of any recognised festival tied to such acts.

Ibori warned against blaming entire communities for the actions of a few individuals, stating that it is both unfair and harmful to present the alleged incident as part of the traditions of the Urhobo and Isoko people.
“Festivals in these communities are deeply rooted in history, spirituality, and morality,” he said. “They are meant to celebrate heritage, strengthen beliefs, and promote unity not violence of any kind.”
While condemning the reported assault, Ibori commended security agencies for stepping in and urged them to carry out a thorough investigation. He expressed hope that the outcome would bring clarity and put an end to what he described as a misleading narrative.
He also promised to collaborate with the Ozoro traditional council and the local university community to engage young people and reinforce respect for shared values, especially the dignity and protection of women.
