Crystal Palace have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), challenging UEFA’s decision to relegate them from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League.

The London club, last season’s FA Cup champions, was penalised due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

UEFA determined that, as of March 1, American businessman John Textor held control or significant influence over both Crystal Palace and French club Lyon.

Under UEFA regulations, this prevents the two clubs from competing in the same European competition. Lyon retained the Europa League spot because of their superior league standing.

Should Palace’s appeal be unsuccessful, Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, is expected to take their place in the Europa League.

CAS confirmed on Tuesday that it received Palace’s appeal and will issue a decision by August 11. Palace is seeking to claim either Forest’s or Lyon’s spot in the competition.

Notably, John Textor had agreed to sell his stake in Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, but this move occurred too late to satisfy UEFA’s regulations.
