Paramilitary Kills 48 in Sudan Attack

An attack by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a village in the country’s central region has resulted in the deaths of 48 civilians, a monitoring group reported.

The Emergency Lawyers, a group documenting atrocities in the two-year conflict between the RSF and the regular army, stated that paramilitary fighters stormed the village of Um Garfa in North Kordofan on Sunday. The assailants allegedly razed homes and looted property, with women and children among the confirmed casualties.

The attack took place about 90 kilometres north of Bara, a city controlled by the RSF where recent clashes with the army have intensified. Um Garfa is also on a major highway leading to Khartoum, which the army recaptured in March. Following their defeat in the capital, the RSF has been fighting to secure new territory.

This violence is part of a larger pattern of intensified fighting in the region. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 3,000 people have been displaced from nearby villages, with many seeking refuge in Bara. The Sudanese army has recently launched offensives to regain control of Bara, a strategic location in North Kordofan.

Now in its third year, the conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating what the United Nations calls the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis.
