The Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been declared the most followed in history, with a record-breaking audience across television and social media platforms, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed Thursday.
IOC President Thomas Bach confirmed that 84% of the global potential audience, approximately 5 billion people, tuned in to follow the Games. On average, each viewer watched nine hours of coverage, marking a 20% increase from the previous Olympics. In France, where the Games were hosted, 95% of the potential audience watched an average of 24 hours of Olympic content.
The Games also saw a massive surge in social media interaction, with 412 billion engagements recorded, an astonishing 290% increase compared to the last edition. Bach emphasized that the Paris 2024 Games demonstrated the Olympic Movement’s growing global appeal and highlighted its resonance, particularly with younger generations.
Surveys conducted by Nielsen, Ipsos, and Publicis Sport & Entertainment revealed that the Games’ message of uniting the world through peaceful competition has never been more important. These findings also showed that Olympic values resonate strongly, especially with younger audiences.
Bach stated that Paris 2024 marked the Olympic Games of a new era, showcasing the unparalleled reach and engagement of the Olympic Games in the digital age. The IOC’s extensive research, based on a global survey of more than 55,000 people aged 13 to 65, further highlighted the worldwide influence of the event.
