Nigerian fintech company Paystack has suspended its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, following allegations of sexual misconduct after his past tweets, which were shared years before the founding of Paystack, resurfaced on Thursday and quickly gained traction on X.
The company has confirmed it is conducting a formal investigation into the allegations, reflecting the increasing attention to workplace behaviour in Africa’s technology industry.
“Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our Co-founder, Ezra Olubi. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation,” the company stated
Between 2009 and 2013, Olubi reportedly made several sexually explicit tweets that included remarks about minors and alluded to sexualized anime characters.
Although he has faced controversy before, particularly regarding his fashion choices, which have often ignited discussions, Olubi was honoured in 2022 with the Order Of The Niger (OON) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In light of the criticism arising from his previous tweets, Olubi deactivated his X account on Thursday and has yet to issue a public response to the allegations.
Paystack, established in 2015 by Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi, primarily provides a payment platform that enables businesses in Africa to process payments online and offline via cards, bank transfers, USSD, QR codes, and mobile money.
