The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, has revealed that the party dissolved its executive committee in Akwa Ibom State because it was allegedly under the control of Governor Umo Eno, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akwa Ibom, a long-time PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, lost its grip on the party when Governor Eno left for the APC on June 6.
His defection made him the second PDP governor in the South-South region to switch parties within two months, following Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Four months after Eno’s departure, the PDP leadership moved to dissolve the state’s executives, citing concerns over their loyalty.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ologunagba explained that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) observed that the Akwa Ibom exco appeared to be aligned with the APC despite still holding PDP positions.
“In Akwa Ibom State, the governor has left. At the NWC level, we noticed there was no clear difference between the executives and their alignment with the APC,” he said.
He cited Section 10, Subsection 6 of the party’s constitution, which prohibits members from collaborating with other political parties or groups to undermine the PDP or its leadership.
“We believe the Akwa Ibom executives were being controlled by the governor, who has now joined the APC. He even stated on record that he would ‘be in charge of both parties,’” Ologunagba added.
