Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola delivered a pointed response to Liverpool fans after being taunted during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Anfield. As the home crowd chanted “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” Guardiola gestured with six fingers—a reminder of the six Premier League titles he has secured with City in the past seven seasons.
The loss marked City’s sixth defeat in their last seven matches, leaving them 11 points behind Liverpool at the top of the table. Despite recently extending his contract at the Etihad until 2027, the 53-year-old Catalan has admitted he won’t hesitate to step aside if results fail to improve.
Guardiola’s six-title gesture carried extra weight, as two of those championships came at Liverpool’s expense in fiercely contested seasons. City edged out the Reds by a single point in both the 2018/19 and 2021/22 campaigns.
However, the defeat also underlined Guardiola’s challenging history at Anfield. Since his arrival at City, he has lost six of 10 visits to Liverpool’s iconic ground. City’s sole victory during that period came in 2021, a match played behind closed doors due to pandemic restrictions.
City’s current form has raised questions about their ability to mount a serious title defence this season, but Guardiola’s defiant gesture at Anfield suggests he remains confident in his legacy and his team’s ability to turn things around.
