Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi has defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi declared his defection in Enugu on Wednesday in advance of the 2027 general elections, according to Vanguard.
Speaking at the event, Obi said his decision to join the ADC was aimed at transforming and rescuing Nigeria. He was quoted as saying that 2026 would mark the beginning of a “rescue journey” for the country.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi declared.

According to the report, Obi also said the opposition would resist election rigging in 2027 through lawful means.
He said, “We will resist rigging of the election by every lawful means in 2027.”
He then called on opposition leaders to unite under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark, who is the national chairman of the ADC.
Several political figures were reported to be in attendance, including former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, former governors from the South-East, and other party leaders.
Also present were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Gilbert Nnaji, as well as Enyinnya Abaribe, Sam Egwu and other serving and former lawmakers.
Recall that an ADC official had earlier told Punch that Obi had concluded plans to join the party and hold a declaration rally in Enugu.
The source said Obi met with David Mark about three weeks earlier, after the party had asked him to clarify his position on joining its coalition.
Obi’s defection adds to ongoing realignments among opposition politicians ahead of the 2027 elections.
