Peter Obi Laments Displacement After Sokoto Attacks

The former Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has lamented the worsening spate of violence across Nigeria.

His warning comes after residents of Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State reportedly fled their homes after terrorists launched a series of assaults on their communities.

“What we are witnessing in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, and indeed across our country, is tragic. It reflects a complete breakdown of governance and humanity,” Obi lamented in a post shared on X on Sunday.

Nigeria has been deeply affected by terror for over a decade. The Global Terror Index ranked as the fourth most-affected country by terrorism globally, with 750 people killed in 2025, up 46% from 2024. Nigeria ranks fourth after Pakistan, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Obi decried the worsening spate of violence across Nigeria, stating that non-state actors have assumed the authority of many Nigerian states and are now deciding who lives where and under what conditions.

“This is not how a nation should function. How did we get to a point where Nigerians are taking instructions from terrorists instead of their government? I have consistently maintained that no nation can progress when its people live in fear,” he added.

“This is no longer just a security issue; it is a national emergency. The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror.”
