Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu over persistent power failures, recalling the president’s 2022 campaign pledge to forgo a second term if he failed to deliver steady electricity within four years.

In a statement on Wednesday, Obi noted that the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, adding that it failed about 12 times last year; developments he said sharply contradicts the president’s promise and should concern Nigerians.

Obi also questioned Tinubu’s continued foreign travels, pointing specifically to his recent trip to Turkey.

He contrasted Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity with that of Turkey, which has a population of about 87 million but produces and distributes more than 120,000 megawatts of power, while Nigeria struggles to generate a fraction of that output.

He appealed to the president to focus on domestic challenges, urging him to remain in the country and confront pressing governance issues, particularly in the power sector.

Obi warned that frequent foreign trips risk projecting misplaced priorities at a time when critical national problems remain unresolved.

The former Anambra State governor further said Nigerians should prioritise demanding accountability and effective governance rather than focusing prematurely on future elections, arguing that poor leadership continues to inflict hardship and indignity on citizens.
