Presidential Spokesperson Daniel Bwala has vowed that former Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi will never become the President of Nigeria.

He had dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, when he opposed the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket. He was a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign and returned to the APC in 2024.

Tinubu appointed him as a spokesperson and began defending Tinubu’s administration, despite previously criticising it. Bwala has been a vocal critic of Obi since he became Tinubu’s aide.

While speaking on News Central’s 60 Minutes With Mr Kay on Friday night, Bwala said Obi lacks the characteristics of an ideal presidential candidate.

“Peter Obi will never be president. He will never cross the central business district, which will lead to Aso Rock Villa. Anybody who will be a president, there are characteristics that you will see. One, the person must be visionary. Two, the person must be grassroots. I’m talking about organic grassroots, not manipulation,” said Bwala.

“And three, the person at least will be sincere for whatever he is. So that if you say this man is good, he’s good for who he is, but he will not present the picture of what is totally the opposite side of who he is. Peter Obi will never be. But if you’re looking for grassroots, you can’t get more grassroots than Peter Obi.”

Bwala recounted a time when Obi reportedly went to a church during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to say the church was being disenfranchised. The spokesperson said Obi told the church to “take back the country”. According to him, Obi pushed this narrative to get the support of Christians.
