A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening destroyed a section of the popular Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos State, destroying about 10 shops.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Controller General, Margaret Adeseye.
According to the statement, the Service received a distress call at about 5:50 p.m. reporting a fire outbreak at the market. Firefighting units were immediately deployed and arrived at the scene within five minutes, at approximately 5:55 p.m.

Adeseye said the fire affected a section of the market made up of five 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, bringing the total number of shops damaged to 10. She said firefighters were able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at approximately 17:50 hours today, reporting a fire outbreak at Arena Market, Bolade, Oshodi. Firefighting units were promptly dispatched and arrived at the scene within five minutes, at about 17:55 hours,” the statement from the Service’s Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, read in part.

“The fire affected a section of the market consisting of five (5) 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, making a total of 10 shops.
“The affected area is primarily used for the storage and sale of clothing materials, which were stocked in bale, the fire has been confined to the affected section and curtailed. The situation is firmly under control, and there is no risk of the fire spreading to other parts of the market.”

No casualties were reported at the time of filing this report, while the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
The 22-story Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, caught fire last week. Authorities said the fire began in a fourth-floor flat and moved to other areas of the building.
