Slovenian cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar secured a historic victory at Milan-San Remo on Saturday, capturing the season’s first “Monument” race spectacularly.
Riding for UAE Team Emirates, the 27-year-old outlasted Briton Tom Pidcock in a frantic sprint finish to the line.
With this win, Pogacar becomes the first reigning world champion to claim the title in over four decades, following in the footsteps of Giuseppe Saronni’s 1983 triumph.
The victory was far from certain, as Pogacar’s carefully planned race strategy was nearly derailed by a crash just kilometres before the decisive Cipressa climb.
Despite the setback, the four-time Tour de France winner recovered to launch a fierce battle alongside Pidcock on the iconic Poggio di San Remo.

The two elite riders broke away from the peloton, with Wout van Aert eventually securing the third spot on the podium after a gruelling 288-kilometre journey.
This latest achievement brings Pogacar one step closer to cycling immortality, as he has now won four of the sport’s five prestigious “Monuments.”
Having already conquered the Tour of Flanders, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and Il Lombardia, only the rugged cobbles of Paris-Roubaix remain for him to complete the full set.
His dominant start to the 2026 season also includes a recent solo victory at Strade Bianche, solidifying his status as the world’s premier all-terrain rider.
