The Kano State Police Command has arrested nine members of a notorious armed robbery gang believed to have been terrorising parts of Kano and neighbouring Kaduna States.
The arrest followed a coordinated operation by the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS), which also led to the recovery of rifles, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, announced the breakthrough during a press briefing on Monday in Kano, noting that the operation was a direct response to a robbery incident that occurred on Wednesday at Unguwar Wambai, Dorayi Babba Quarters.
According to Bakori, the suspects attacked a residence around 2 a.m., during which they stole a Toyota Yaris car, ₦3.7 million, three mobile phones, and other valuables.
“In the course of the attack, the suspects assaulted the victim’s wife, causing serious injuries,” the Commissioner stated.
He said that a prompt response from operatives attached to Dorayi Division led to the arrest of one suspect, while further intelligence gathering by the SIS resulted in the capture of eight others at different locations across Kano and Kaduna.
The arrested suspects were identified as:
Abubakar Aminu (22), Aliyu Aliyu (23), Abubakar Usman (22), Sulaiman Sani (20), Yusuf Yusuf (17), Abdulrahman Aliyu (23), Salisu Hussaini (17), Sulaiman Abdullahi (20), and Abdulmutallib Sa’ad (24).
Bakori said the suspects have confessed to participating in multiple robbery operations in Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, including a recent attack at Unguwar Jakada, Dorayi Quarters.
Recovered items include:
- One double-barrel gun
- One English Falcon pistol
- One scrapped Phoenix pistol
- 18 live cartridges
- Two cutlasses and four knives
- One iron cutter
- Three torchlights
- Two mobile phones
- A red Toyota Corolla LE used for operations
“All the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” Bakori affirmed.
The Commissioner highlighted the achievements of Operation Kukan Kura, the command’s community-driven crime prevention initiative, which he said has led to a sharp decline in violent crimes, phone snatching, and street thuggery in the state.
Bakori commended his officers for their professionalism and dedication and appreciated residents for their continued support and information sharing, assuring that the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property across Kano State.
