The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed a night attack in Gwan-Ajang village of Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which left five people dead.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, said officers from the Gindiri Division received a distress call at about 9:22 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2026, and immediately mobilised to the scene to restore order.

He said the attack occurred while residents were attending a social gathering in the community.

Alabo explained that police officers arrived to a distressing scene where some victims were found lying in pools of blood.

According to him, five persons were confirmed dead at the scene.

“We got a call of a shooting that happened around Gwan-Ajang village, and we mobilised men to stabilise the situation.

“From what we gathered, some members of the community were having an occasion or a party when they suddenly heard sporadic shooting,” he said.

“When our men got there, they met some persons in pools of their blood. As I speak to you, five of them were confirmed dead,” Alabo stated.

He also noted that the exact location of the attack has generated some confusion, as the boundary area between Mangu and Barkin Ladi LGAs has led to conflicting accounts from residents.

“Depending on where people are telling the story from, some say Barkin Ladi, others say Mangu,” he added

The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police had directed operational teams, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, to intensify response efforts.

He further confirmed that joint security operations involving Operation Enduring Peace had been deployed to the area, adding that calm had been restored and arrests were expected as intelligence had already been gathered.

“Our men are there, and we are working with Operation Enduring Peace, who have also made deployments. Calm has been restored, and we are looking forward to making some arrests because we have good intel,” he added.

However, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Rwang Tengwong, claimed that at least seven people were killed in the attack, alleging that armed Fulani assailants were responsible.

He also said more than 10 others were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital.

“At least seven persons have been reportedly killed in another armed invasion by armed Fulani gangs at about 9:30 p.m. in Gwan-Ajang village,” Tengwong alleged.

Security agencies say investigations are ongoing, while patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified in the area to apprehend those responsible.
