The Nigeria Police Force has held a memorial service in Abuja to honour 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who lost their lives during an operation against suspected bandits in Kebbi State.
The officers were killed on August 10, 2026, during an encounter with a heavily armed group along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area, while responding to security threats involving bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States.
Senior police officers, colleagues and families of the deceased gathered at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday to pay tribute to the fallen personnel, with prayers held in recognition of their service, courage and sacrifice.
Speaking at the memorial, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the officers as gallant personnel who paid the ultimate price while protecting lives and property. The IGP extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that the Police Force would continue to support them, adding that their loved ones’ sacrifices would not be forgotten.
He said the Force would not be deterred in its operations against banditry, terrorism and violent criminality, stressing that efforts would continue to identify and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on security personnel and civilians.
Commander of the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, said further operational assessments showed that the losses suffered by the attackers during the encounter were significantly higher than initially reported.
He urged SIS personnel to remain committed and maintain the courage shown by their fallen colleagues, saying their sacrifice should strengthen the unit’s resolve.
Representing the bereaved families, Grace Bala Buba, daughter of one of the deceased officers, thanked the Nigeria Police Force for honouring the fallen personnel and for the support provided to their families.
The IGP called on police officers to remember the fallen heroes with pride and gratitude, while reaffirming the Force’s commitment to sustaining operations against criminal groups and ensuring that those responsible for attacks on officers and citizens face justice.
