Nigerian police have rescued 10 people after gunmen attacked two buses carrying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other passengers along the Owerri-Onitsha road in southeastern Imo State, police said on Thursday.
The attack occurred at about 6:30 am (0530 GMT) near Umunoha, as the buses travelled from Ibadan to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, and Bende in neighbouring Abia State, according to a statement by the Imo State Police Command.
“Both buses have been recovered, and 10 victims were rescued at the scene,” the command said, adding that the victims were safe and receiving assistance.

Police said the number of passengers abducted was still being verified and would be made public once confirmed.
Tactical teams and personnel from other security agencies have been deployed for search and rescue operations, supported by intelligence-led efforts to track down the suspected abductors.

Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso and other security chiefs visited the scene to assess the situation and direct the operation.
Bosso assured the public that the operation would continue until all the abducted passengers were rescued and the suspects arrested.
“The Command will sustain the operation until all victims are safely recovered and the suspects are brought to justice,” the statement quoted him as saying.
Police said they were working with the NYSC to contact the families of affected corps members and provide updates.
The affected section of the highway has been reopened, with security personnel deployed to protect commuters, police added.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could help locate the abducted passengers and apprehend the suspects.
