Tributes quickly poured in for Reiner, 78, whose career spanned decades and included directing some of Hollywood’s most celebrated films.

Former US vice president Kamala Harris said she was “devastated” by the deaths, while former president Barack Obama said he and his wife Michelle were “heartbroken”, praising Reiner’s belief in the goodness of people as reflected in his work.

Reiner was best known for directing classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men, the latter earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. His films ranged from sharp comedy to intense drama and secured him a devoted global following.

Before establishing himself behind the camera, Reiner rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family.

He later became a prominent progressive voice in US public life, supporting causes including LGBTQ rights and early childhood development initiatives, and campaigning for Democratic political candidates.

The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern American cinema, leaving behind a legacy that shaped generations of film and television audiences.
