Pope Leo XIV used his historic visit to Monaco on Saturday to speak out against the growing gap between the rich and the poor around the world.

Arriving as the first pontiff to visit the principality in nearly 500 years, the American-born Pope was received by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene.

Speaking from the balcony of the Prince’s Palace, he condemned the “structures of sin” that create vast social chasms, urging that wealth must serve the cause of justice rather than the “logic of omnipotence.”

The visit to the world’s most famous millionaire’s playground provided a striking backdrop for the Pope’s message of social equity.

He emphasised that financial resources should be a tool for peace, especially as international conflicts continue to destabilise the global economy.

Beyond economic inequality, the pontiff and Prince Albert discussed shared interests in environmental conservation and the “protection of life,” a stance that reinforces Monaco’s position as one of the few European nations where Catholicism remains the state religion.

While the streets were lined with luxury vehicles and tourists, thousands of residents gathered to hear the Pope’s call for a more humane and unified world.

The day’s events culminated in an outdoor mass at the Louis II stadium, attended by an estimated 15,000 people.

For many in the microstate, the visit represented a rare moment when global billionaires and local workers joined together, highlighting the Pope’s role in bridge-building amid intense geopolitical tension.
