President Tinubu Commissions Two New Attack Helicopters

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned two new attack helicopters to bolster Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.

The aircraft were formally inducted into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet during a ceremony held in Abuja, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the President.

The commissioning event also marked the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force.

The two helicopters, designated NAF544 and NAF545, are intended to enhance the military’s operational capabilities, particularly in addressing the nation’s ongoing security challenges.

49 More Aircraft by 2027

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, announced that the Air Force is set to receive 49 additional aircraft by the year 2027.

According to him, nine new aircraft have already been delivered to the NAF since 2024. These include four T-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360 surveillance aircraft, and the two newly inducted Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters.

Air Marshal Abubakar detailed the upcoming acquisitions, which include:

  • 10 more Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters
  • 12 A-1 Zulu attack helicopters
  • 20 M-346 attack and ground support aircraft
  • 3 CASA 295 transport aircraft

“These procurements reflect Mr President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” the Air Chief said.

The NAF leadership reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that the new platforms are deployed effectively in support of national defence and counter-insurgency operations.
