President Tinubu Orders Probe into Abuja Tanker Tragedy

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has ordered a probe into the tanker explosion that led to multiple crashes and fatalities in Karu, Abuja, on Wednesday evening. 

In a statement on Thursday, March 20, 2025, the president extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and directed that all injured victims receive immediate medical care.

He also instructed security agencies, particularly road safety officials, to enhance traffic management at key entry and exit points in the capital.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department has confirmed that 10 people perished in the disaster.

Mark Nyam, Head of Forecasting, Response, and Mitigation, disclosed that eight bodies were taken to Karu Hospital Morgue, one to Asokoro District Hospital, and another to the National Hospital, Abuja. 

More than 30 people sustained severe burns and have been transferred to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre Keffi, and Cedarcrest Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

The explosion occurred when a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck lost control and crashed into several vehicles, sparking a fire that engulfed at least 10 cars.

After assessing the accident site, the Acting Director General of the emergency department, Abdulrahman Mohammed, urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations and avoid reckless manoeuvres, dangerous overtaking, and neglecting vehicle maintenance. 

He also reminded residents to utilise the 112 toll-free emergency line to report accidents and other urgent incidents without delay.
