The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year has passed its second reading at the upper chamber of Nigeria’s legislature, the Senate.

The breakdown of the ₦2.201 trillion budget includes capital expenditure of ₦1.6 trillion, overhead costs of ₦378 billion and personnel Costs of ₦165.8 billion.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, stressed that the budget is designed to sustain the speed of ongoing infrastructure projects. He noted that the funds will be used to expand public utilities, develop satellite towns, and improve waste management systems across the FCT.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for the transformation of Abuja’s landscape.

Some lawmakers, including Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos Central, urged the Senate to conduct a comprehensive review of revenue sources and to provide a specific analysis of line items to ensure fiscal discipline.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has referred the bill to the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory and Area Councils.

Akpabio directed the committee to conduct a detailed review of the proposed budget and report back to the plenary within one week for final consideration and passage.
