A crowd gathered outside the Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) regional office in Douala on Thursday to rally against what they allege to be the falsification of election results in the Littoral Region, News Central’s correspondent Kathleen Ndongmo reports.

The demonstration came as Cameroonians continued to await the official results of the October 12 presidential election, a tense and closely watched vote seen as a critical test for the country’s future.

Police deployed water cannons and fired teargas to disperse an angry crowd in the Santa Barbara neighbourhood of Douala.

According to reports, the citizens were protesting alleged irregularities in the election results from several polling stations in the area.

Meanwhile, in the northern town of Kousseri, tempers flared outside the courthouse when demonstrators demanded access to the original result sheets. The confrontation quickly escalated into scuffles with police, reflecting the deepening distrust spreading across the country.

The poll, which featured 92-year-old President Paul Biya seeking to extend his 43-year rule against 11 challengers, was marked by low voter turnout in some areas and allegations of irregularities from opposition parties.

ELECAM has yet to release the official tally, fuelling anxiety and calls for transparency in the post-election period.
