A protest broke out on Monday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata Plaza, Abuja, as supporters of the factional acting National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the premises demanding control.

Chanting solidarity songs, the demonstrators called on the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Umar Damagum, to vacate the party’s headquarters immediately.

Last week, Abdulrahman was announced as the acting national chairman amid a deepening leadership crisis that saw the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for one month.

In a separate development, the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met elsewhere in Abuja and declared the suspension of the Damagum-led NWC.

The demonstrators accused Damagum’s leadership of mismanaging the party’s affairs and vowed to reclaim the secretariat for Abdulrahman’s faction.

Security operatives were deployed around the building to prevent clashes as tensions escalated between the groups.

Meanwhile, the Abdulrahman-led faction has reportedly taken over the office of the National Chairman.

Speaking to journalists, Abdulrahman pledged to unite and reposition the PDP ahead of future elections, reaffirming his dedication to the party’s revival.

“We are ready to work in the interest of our dear party,” he said.
