PSG Champions League Victory Sparks Joy and Chaos in French Capital

Paris erupted in celebration on Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their first-ever Champions League title with a resounding 5-0 win over Inter Milan — but the festivities turned chaotic in parts of the city, leading to nearly 300 arrests.

While the vast majority of supporters filled the streets with singing, dancing, and car horns in a joyous display, tensions flared in areas such as the Champs-Elysees and outside the Parc des Princes stadium, where around 48,000 fans had gathered to watch the final on giant screens.

According to Paris police, the majority of those detained were held for possession of fireworks and public disorder offences. Police used water cannons to prevent crowds from reaching the Arc de Triomphe amid repeated clashes, which included fireworks and other projectiles being thrown at officers.

Beyond the capital, celebrations also turned grim in Grenoble, southeastern France, when a car drove into a group of jubilant PSG fans, injuring four people from the same family — two of them seriously. The driver later surrendered to police and was taken into custody. A source close to the case said the act was not believed to have been intentional.

Back in Paris, the mood among the general crowd remained jubilant. “This is incredible and so well-earned,” said Clément, a 20-year-old supporter. “We have a song about struggle, and it’s true — it hasn’t always been easy. But this season, we believed again. This is a team of 11 players who fight for each other.”

French President Emmanuel Macron, who hailed the win as a “day of glory for PSG” in a post on X, will host the team at the Élysée Palace on Sunday to celebrate the historic victory. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo also described the result as a “historic” achievement.

A victory parade is planned along the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, with tens of thousands of fans expected to cheer the returning squad as they parade the trophy through the capital.
