Qatar, Iran Hold Talks Over Strait Of Hormuz Security

Qatar and Iran have held talks in Tehran on tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to ease the Middle East war.

Qatar’s Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday.

The meeting came during a week of diplomatic efforts involving Oman and Pakistan to end the conflict and reopen the vital waterway.

The talks also followed new US threats of secondary sanctions against countries, banks and companies doing business with Iran under its “economic asphyxiation” campaign.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said the officials discussed a proposed framework for managing the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman.

“Talks stressed the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law,” Al Thani said.

He said Qatar believes dialogue and diplomacy remain the best way to resolve regional crises.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global energy route, making its security important to international oil supplies.

Qatar, alongside Pakistan, previously helped secure an April ceasefire and a June agreement between Iran and the United States.

Both agreements have since collapsed.

The latest talks are part of renewed diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and restore navigation through the strategic waterway.
