Spanish footballer Rafa Mir has been formally indicted on charges of sexual assault “involving carnal knowledge and the use of violence”, Spanish judicial sources confirmed to AFP on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old striker, who is currently playing for Elche on loan from Sevilla, is accused of committing the offence on 1 September 2024 at his residence in Betera, a town in the province of Valencia.
Another man, Pablo Jara, a former footballer no longer active in the professional game, has also been charged in connection with a separate sexual assault against another woman at Mir’s house on the same evening, although his case does not involve sexual intercourse.
Both men have been ordered to appear before a judge on 13 October, with Mir set to give his testimony remotely.
According to a judicial source cited by AFP, the investigating magistrate believes that “the evidence gathered during the course of the investigation indicates, rather than merely suggests, that Mir sexually assaulted one of the two women on two occasions.”
Mir, who began his career in Valencia’s youth academy, joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018 before moving to Sevilla in 2021. He returned to Valencia on loan in July 2024, shortly before the alleged assault occurred.
He was arrested in September 2024 and suspended by Valencia for two matches following the incident.
