The body of Kenya’s prominent opposition leader, Raila Odinga, arrived at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday after being flown back from India, AFP journalists reported.
A large crowd gathered at the airport to pay their respects to Odinga, who reportedly died of a suspected heart attack while receiving treatment at a health clinic in India on Wednesday, October 12, 2025.
Kenyan President William Ruto has announced seven days of national mourning and a state funeral in honour of opposition leader Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday.
In a tribute, Ruto described Odinga as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons — a towering figure of democracy, a courageous freedom fighter, and an unwavering advocate of good governance.”
The president also said he would suspend all public engagements during the mourning period as a sign of respect for the late political icon.
