South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has accused the United States, under President Donald Trump, of spreading “blatant misinformation” by falsely claiming that South Africa is perpetrating “white genocide” against the Afrikaner population and illegally confiscating land from white people.

Ramaphosa’s televised address confirmed that these “baseless and false allegations” were the reasons the US gave for boycotting the recent G20 summit in Johannesburg and for excluding South Africa from the next gathering of the world’s leading economies.

The President asserted that the US administration’s stance was fuelled by a “sustained campaign of disinformation” that undermines South Africa’s national interests, harms jobs, and weakens relations with a major partner.

Despite the damage caused by the misinformation, Ramaphosa stated that South Africa is willing to continue engaging in respectful dialogue with the US government.
